Raja Ampat Christmas & New Year Private Charter 2027

Christmas and New Year are the hardest dates to secure in Raja Ampat. The good boats are locked nine to twelve months ahead, minimum charter lengths rise to seven or ten nights, and peak surcharges apply. If you want festive 2027 dates, start the conversation now rather than in September.

Why are the festive dates so difficult?

Two forces collide. December to March is the peak of the Raja Ampat cruising season — the settled sea state, the best visibility, the highest manta activity — so the whole market wants those weeks anyway. On top of that, the fleet is small. Raja Ampat is not the Mediterranean; there are perhaps a few dozen genuinely good charter vessels working the archipelago, and many reposition to Komodo between June and September. When one boat is taken over New Year, there is no second identical boat waiting behind it.

Komodo Luxury, part of Juara Holding Group and chartering Indonesian vessels since 2015, opens festive enquiries roughly a year ahead for exactly this reason.

What is the weather like over Christmas?

Good, and wetter than people expect. December to March offers the calmest water and the most reliable diving conditions of the year, which is why it is peak. It is also within the wetter half of the West Papuan year: short, heavy tropical showers that usually clear within the hour, not all-day drizzle. Water temperature stays in the high twenties Celsius. Reef mantas are resident year-round at Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge, with oceanic mantas at Blue Magic and Magic Mountain, and encounter probability is at its highest during exactly this window. Broader seasonal detail is on our best time to charter guide.

What do peak dates cost?

Boat class Standard season, per night (USD) Typical minimum nights, festive Indicative festive positioning
Value phinisi (6–10 guests) 1,900–4,500 7 Upper end of band, plus peak supplement
Mid-range phinisi (8–14 guests) 4,500–9,000 7–10 Upper end of band, plus peak supplement
Luxury phinisi (10–16 guests) 8,000–14,000 10 Upper end; flagships 18,000–20,000+
Expedition motor yacht 15,000–25,000+ 10 Quoted individually; extremes near 50,000

We do not publish a fixed festive percentage, because it is set by each vessel’s owner and changes year to year. What we will tell you honestly: assume the top of the standard band as your starting point over Christmas and New Year, assume a longer minimum charter than you had planned, and assume the price does not fall as the date approaches. Comparative rates by tier are on the charter cost page.

What festive itineraries work best?

Length Route Best for
7 nights Sorong → Fam/Piaynemo → Wayag → Kawe → Aljui → Dampier Strait → Waisai Families and first-timers wanting the iconic karst views
7 nights (alt.) Sorong → Misool (overnight) → Magic Mountain, Boo Windows, lagoons → Dampier Strait Divers prioritising soft coral and swim-throughs
10 nights Misool → Dampier Strait → Fam → Wayag → Waisai Groups wanting the full archipelago in one charter

Details of each route sit on the 7-night north expedition and the 10-night grand tour pages.

What happens on board at Christmas and New Year?

Less tinsel than you might fear. The chef builds a Christmas dinner around whatever came aboard in Sorong — usually a long table on the aft deck, or on a tidal sandbar if the tide cooperates, with lanterns and the tender standing by. New Year’s Eve is normally spent at anchor in a sheltered bay: dinner, a deck party as loud or as quiet as your group wants, and the sky. There is no light pollution in Raja Ampat, which does more for a midnight toast than any firework. Crews are generous about it and will happily learn your family’s traditions if you tell them in advance.

How does booking actually work?

Stage What happens
1. Availability check We check the specific vessels free for your dates — no deposit requested until a boat is confirmed held.
2. Written quote Whole-boat rate, inclusions, exclusions, fuel policy and minimum nights, in writing.
3. Deposit Paid on contract signature to hold the dates; percentage set by the vessel owner.
4. Balance milestones Scheduled instalments before embarkation, stated in the contract.
5. Pre-departure Dietary requirements, cabin allocation, dive certifications, insurance details, permit arrangement.
6. Embarkation Meet at SOQ, transfer, board, safety briefing, sail.

Cancellation terms are tiered by days before departure and are stricter on peak dates than in shoulder season — that is standard across the market, not a quirk of ours. Travel insurance is required for all guests and dive-inclusive cover for divers. Our booking process page walks through each stage in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

When should I book a Raja Ampat charter for Christmas or New Year?

Nine to twelve months ahead for a good vessel. Twelve to eighteen months for a flagship phinisi or expedition motor yacht. Enquiries arriving in October for that December are usually too late for anything but a cancellation.

Is there really a peak surcharge?

Yes on most vessels, either as an explicit supplement or as a higher published festive rate. It is set by the owner. We show it as a line item rather than folding it invisibly into the total.

What is the minimum number of nights over New Year?

Commonly seven, often ten on luxury vessels across the Christmas–New Year block. Short festive charters barely exist because owners will not break the period into fragments.

Will it rain over Christmas?

Probably, in short heavy bursts that pass. It rarely disrupts a day’s programme, and the sea state through December to March is the calmest of the year.

Are the sites crowded at peak?

Busier than in October, but Raja Ampat at peak is still empty by most standards. A private charter anchored overnight lets you reach Piaynemo or Manta Sandy at first light, before the day boats leave Waisai.

Can we hold dates while we confirm our group?

Usually for a short courtesy window, set by the vessel owner and typically measured in days rather than weeks over peak dates. We will tell you exactly how long we can hold.

What if flights are disrupted?

Fly into Sorong at least one day early over the festive period and stay the night — domestic Indonesian schedules are at their most fragile in late December. We insist on this for peak-date charters.

Do you handle Christmas dietary requests?

Yes, if we have them in advance. Everything is provisioned in Sorong before you sail; nothing can be added once you are at sea.
