Ten to twelve nights is the only honest way to combine Misool, the Dampier Strait and the northern islands in one private charter. Misool alone is an overnight passage from Sorong; Wayag is an overnight passage in the opposite direction. Rates run roughly USD 1,900–14,000 per boat per night by class.
Why does a full Raja Ampat circuit need ten nights?
Raja Ampat is not one place. It is four practical cruising zones separated by real distance: the Central/Dampier Strait cluster, the North (Fam, Piaynemo, Wayag, Kawe, Aljui), the South around Misool, and the long crossings towards Kofiau, Triton Bay and the Banda Sea. Sorong or Waisai to Misool is an overnight leg of roughly ten to fourteen hours. Waisai to Wayag is another overnight leg the other way. Add the days you actually want in the water and ten nights is the arithmetic floor; twelve is comfortable.
Komodo Luxury — part of Juara Holding Group, running Indonesian charters since 2015 — treats this as the top-of-range expedition: exclusive use of the vessel, a cruise director who plans around tide and weather rather than a brochure, and a route that earns its length.
How do the three zones compare?
| Zone | Signature sites | Scenery | Current | Travel time from Sorong |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South / Misool | Magic Mountain, Boo Windows, Four Kings, Nudi Rock | Karst lagoons, hidden bays, jellyfish lake | Moderate to strong | Overnight (~10–14 h) |
| Central / Dampier Strait | Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Sardine Reef, Manta Sandy, Mioskon | Low green islands, jetties, villages | Often strong drift | 5–7 h / overnight |
| North | Melissa’s Garden, Kawe walls, Aljui Bay muck sites | Wayag and Piaynemo karst panoramas | Mild to moderate | Two overnight legs |
If someone forces you to pick one: Misool for scenery and soft coral, the Dampier Strait for fish density, the north for the view everyone photographs. A ten-night charter is how you stop choosing.
What does the 10-night route look like?
| Night | Area | Programme |
|---|---|---|
| N1 | Repositioning leg Sorong → Misool | Embark, brief, overnight passage south |
| N2 | Misool south-east | Magic Mountain (5–40 m, ridge with reef and oceanic manta cleaning stations) |
| N3 | Misool west | Boo Windows (limestone swim-throughs at 5–15 m), Nudi Rock macro (5–25 m) |
| N4 | Misool lagoons | Balbulol and Yapap karst lagoons, Harfat Jaya viewpoint, kayaking |
| N5 | Misool north / Four Kings | Four pinnacles, strong current, advanced; jellyfish lake climb if rangers permit |
| N6 | Repositioning leg Misool → Dampier | Overnight passage north |
| N7 | Dampier Strait | Cape Kri, Sardine Reef, Manta Sandy; Arborek village |
| N8 | Dampier / Kabui | Blue Magic, Mioskon night dive, Kabui Passage and Batu Pensil |
| N9 | Repositioning leg → Fam | Piaynemo sunrise (~300 steps), Melissa’s Garden |
| N10 | Fam → Waisai | Final shallow reef, return leg |
| Day 11 | Waisai / Sorong | Disembark, afternoon flight |
Add two nights and Wayag slots in after Fam, giving a twelve-night circuit that covers all three zones plus the northern karst. Guests focused only on the north should read the 7-night north expedition; Misool-only travellers will find route detail on our Misool charter page.
What makes Misool different?
Softer coral, quieter water, and karst that closes in around you. Magic Mountain — Karang Bayangan on the charts — is a ridge with both reef and oceanic manta cleaning stations, plateau at 5–15 metres dropping past 30–40, moderate to strong current, advanced level. Boo Windows is the photograph everyone knows: limestone swim-through windows at 5–15 metres with a diver silhouetted in the arch. Four Kings is four pinnacles in current, for divers who like being pinned. Above water, the Balbulol and Yapap lagoons, the Harfat Jaya viewpoint and the Karawapop heart-shaped lagoon are the best kayaking in Raja Ampat.
The area also holds a marine jellyfish lake, commonly called Lenmakana, reached by boat and a steep limestone climb. Snorkelling among the non-stinging jellyfish is permitted under local rules — no fin damage, no touching, no sunscreen — and access is at the rangers’ discretion, which we confirm at the time rather than promising in advance.
What does a 10-night charter cost?
| Boat class | Per night (USD) | 10 nights, whole boat | Per person at 8 | at 10 | at 12 | at 14 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value phinisi | 1,900–4,500 | 19,000–45,000 | 2,375–5,625 | 1,900–4,500 | 1,583–3,750 | — |
| Mid-range phinisi | 4,500–9,000 | 45,000–90,000 | 5,625–11,250 | 4,500–9,000 | 3,750–7,500 | 3,214–6,428 |
| Luxury phinisi | 8,000–14,000 | 80,000–140,000 | 10,000–17,500 | 8,000–14,000 | 6,667–11,667 | 5,714–10,000 |
Per-person figures are the boat rate divided by guest count — the maths every group should do before comparing a private charter to per-cabin liveaboard rates, which typically run USD 400–900 per person per night on standard vessels and USD 700–1,500 on luxury ones. Fill a boat properly and exclusive use often wins.
An honest word about fuel surcharges
Long repositioning legs burn fuel, and a Misool-plus-Wayag circuit is about as long as Raja Ampat gets. Some vessels absorb it; others apply a surcharge on routes of this length. We would rather flag it here than surprise you on the final invoice. Ask for the fuel policy in writing alongside the charter rate — with us, and with anyone else you are considering. Comparative cost detail sits on our charter cost page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Misool or the north better?
Misool for soft coral, swim-throughs and lagoon scenery; the north for the karst panoramas at Wayag and Piaynemo and for muck diving at Aljui. Divers usually lean Misool, photographers of landscape lean north.
Can I do Misool in less than ten nights?
Misool alone works in seven to eight nights. It is combining Misool with the Dampier Strait and the north that demands ten to twelve.
How much time is spent sailing?
On a ten-night circuit, roughly three nights are pure repositioning legs, sailed while you sleep. Daytime hops between sites are usually twenty minutes to two hours.
Will I be seasick on the crossings?
The open legs between zones are more exposed than the sheltered central waters. Take medication before departure rather than after symptoms start, sleep low and central in the boat, and stay on deck in fresh air when awake.
Is the jellyfish lake guaranteed?
No. Access depends on ranger permission, local rules and conditions on the day. We check on arrival and never sell it as a certainty.
How many dives can we expect over ten nights?
Typically 25 to 30, at three per full day plus optional night dives, with reduced diving on repositioning days and none within 24 hours of flying.
What is the best window for a full circuit?
December to March, when the sea is most settled across all three zones. October, November and April work well but carry more variability on the long crossings.
How far ahead do we need to book?
Twelve months for peak dates. Ten- and twelve-night blocks are the hardest slots to find because they consume two shorter charters’ worth of calendar.
Can a larger group take the whole boat?
Yes — this route works particularly well for twelve to sixteen guests, where the per-person maths becomes compelling. See the group and corporate charter page.
Do you handle special diets on a ten-night trip?
Yes, but tell us early. Provisioning for eleven days happens in Sorong before departure; there is no supermarket at Misool.
