Yes, you can charter a motor yacht or expedition superyacht in Raja Ampat. Rates run roughly USD 15,000–25,000 per night, with extremes near USD 50,000, against USD 8,000–14,000 for a luxury phinisi. What you buy is speed, stabilised comfort and range — a faster hull reaches Wayag and Misool in one week instead of ten nights.
What changes when you move from phinisi to motor yacht?
Three things: pace, motion and reach. A traditional phinisi cruises at eight or nine knots and rolls with the swell; it is beautiful, and it is slow. A modern expedition motor yacht cruises at twelve to sixteen knots with stabilisers running, turning an overnight repositioning leg into an afternoon. That single difference reshapes what is possible inside a fixed number of nights.
The trade is character and cost. A phinisi under sail off Wayag is one of the great images in Indonesian cruising. A superyacht is a different proposition — closer to a floating hotel with a serious tender fleet. Komodo Luxury, part of Juara Holding Group and chartering Indonesian vessels since 2015, brokers both and will tell you plainly which suits your group.
How do the vessel classes compare?
| Class | LOA | Guests | Cabins | Crew | Cruising speed | Per night (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value phinisi | 25–32 m | 6–10 | 3–5 | 8–12 | 7–9 kn | 1,900–4,500 |
| Mid-range phinisi / small motor yacht | 30–40 m | 8–14 | 5–7 | 10–15 | 9–12 kn | 4,500–9,000 |
| Luxury phinisi | 40–51 m | 10–16 | 5–9 | 12–18 | 8–10 kn | 8,000–14,000 |
| Flagship phinisi | 45–51 m | 12–20 | 7–9 suites | 15–22 | 8–10 kn | 18,000–20,000+ |

What does the extra speed actually unlock?
On a phinisi, Sorong to Misool is an overnight passage of ten to fourteen hours, and Waisai to Wayag is another overnight leg in the opposite direction. Those two legs are why combining north and south honestly requires ten to twelve nights under sail. A motor yacht at fourteen knots compresses each of them into a long daylight run, which means a seven-night charter can realistically take in Misool, the Dampier Strait and Wayag — a route that would otherwise need a fortnight.
Range matters in the other direction too. Faster hulls make Kofiau, Triton Bay and even Banda Sea crossings feasible as extensions rather than fantasies. If your group’s constraint is calendar rather than budget, speed is the thing worth paying for. If your constraint is budget, the 10-night grand tour on a phinisi reaches the same places for less money and more days.
What facilities come at this tier?
- Tenders — usually two or three, including a fast RIB, so divers and non-divers can run separate programmes without waiting.
- Dive deck — dedicated setup stations, rinse tanks, compressor and often nitrox membrane systems.
- Camera room — charging, drying and rinse facilities that underwater photographers genuinely need on a two-week trip.
- Wellness — jacuzzi, spa treatment space, massage therapist on the larger vessels.
- Water toys — kayaks, paddleboards, seabobs, fishing tackle, occasionally a helipad on true superyachts.
- Stabilisers — at anchor as well as under way on many modern hulls, which changes how well people sleep.
How is provisioning and dining handled?
At this tier the chef builds menus around your preferences before departure, not around a standard rotation. Allergies, religious requirements, children’s tastes, wine preferences and any specific provisioning request are collected weeks ahead, because everything is bought in Sorong before you sail — Raja Ampat has no resupply. Three meals a day plus snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are standard inclusions; alcohol and special provisioning are charged separately, usually at cost plus handling.
What are the booking terms at superyacht level?
| Item | Typical arrangement |
|---|---|
| Deposit | A substantial percentage on contract signature, balance in scheduled milestones before embarkation |
| Extras handling | Advance provisioning allowance style: fuel above the agreed route, alcohol, port fees drawn from a pre-funded float and reconciled at the end |
| Cancellation | Tiered by days before departure; peak dates are stricter |
| Insurance | Travel insurance required for all guests; dive insurance required for divers |
| Fuel surcharge | Applies on routes materially longer than the contracted itinerary — confirmed in writing beforehand |
Exact percentages and milestone dates vary by vessel and owner. We send the full charter agreement before any payment, and we do not ask for a deposit on a boat we have not confirmed as available.
Frequently asked questions
Can you really charter a superyacht in Raja Ampat?
Yes. A number of expedition-class motor yachts operate Indonesian seasons, typically Raja Ampat from October to April and Komodo mid-year. Availability is thin and lead times are long, so start the conversation early.
What is the difference between a phinisi and a motor yacht here?
A phinisi is a traditional Indonesian wooden vessel, slower and more atmospheric, with 5–9 cabins and a crew of 10–20. A motor yacht is faster, more stable, usually steel or aluminium, with a larger crew-to-guest ratio and more technical facilities. Both can be superb; they suit different travellers.
Is a superyacht worth it for diving?
If your group dives seriously and wants nitrox, multiple tenders and a proper camera room, the facilities justify themselves. If you want maximum dive days per dollar, a well-equipped dive phinisi delivers more water time — see the Dampier Strait dive charter.
How many guests can a superyacht take?
Typically 10 to 20 in six to ten cabins. Indonesian regulations and cabin layout, not hull length, usually set the ceiling.
Are there stabilisers?
On most modern expedition yachts, yes, including zero-speed stabilisation at anchor on many. This is the single biggest comfort difference from a traditional hull.
What is included in the nightly rate?
Crew, meals, non-alcoholic drinks, tender use, standard water toys and fuel for the agreed itinerary. Marine park permits, alcohol, dive packages where not bundled, nitrox, port fees, taxes, gratuities and insurance sit outside it.
Can we charter for celebrations or a wedding?
Yes — the larger vessels handle events well. Our honeymoon and couples page covers the intimate end, and the group and corporate page the larger one.
How far ahead should we book at this level?
Twelve to eighteen months for peak dates. There are only so many expedition yachts in Indonesian waters and their calendars fill early.
