How do you actually get to a Raja Ampat charter?
The chain is short but unforgiving of bad flight choices. Sorong Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) on the West Papuan mainland is the gateway; there is no international service, so every route runs through an Indonesian hub — most commonly Jakarta, Makassar or Bali, on Garuda Indonesia or Lion Air. From SOQ it is a short road transfer to the harbour, where your vessel or its tender is waiting. If your charter starts at Waisai on Waigeo island instead, you cross either by the public fast ferry or by private speedboat.

Schedules shift season to season, so treat this as a planning frame and confirm actual timings when you ticket. Our rule of thumb: an arrival before roughly 10:00 gives a comfortable same-day embarkation; anything later and you are either sailing at dusk or sleeping ashore.
Should we add a night in Sorong?
We push guests hard on this, and we mean it. Indonesian domestic connections misbehave — weather in Makassar, an aircraft swap in Jakarta, a delayed inbound — and a charter does not wait. One night in Sorong before embarkation converts a missed connection from a catastrophe into an inconvenience. On the return leg the same logic applies in reverse if you have a long-haul flight to catch: disembarking at midday and flying internationally that night leaves no margin.

What about luggage and dive gear?
- Domestic baggage limits are real. Indonesian domestic economy allowances are considerably tighter than international ones, and dive gear eats an allowance fast. Check your specific ticket and pre-purchase excess weight if needed — it is far cheaper online than at the SOQ counter.
- Soft bags only. Cabin storage on a phinisi is designed for duffels, not hard cases. Hard cases get stowed in a hold you cannot reach mid-cruise.
- Carry your essentials. Mask, computer, regulator, medication and one change of clothes in hand luggage. Bags occasionally arrive a flight behind you; a boat does not wait for them.
- Crew handles the rest. Porters at SOQ and at the harbour, tanks and weights supplied on dive-equipped vessels.

What is the marine park permit and what does it cost?
Raja Ampat operates a visitor retribution scheme that funds conservation and local communities. It is sold as an annual pass, bought in Sorong or Waisai, and charter operators normally arrange it before boarding — you will not need to queue for it yourself.
On the fee, we are going to be straight with you rather than quote a tidy number. Published figures currently conflict. Some operator pages state a single retribution of IDR 1,000,000 for foreign visitors and IDR 500,000 for Indonesians. Other 2025–26 sources describe an environmental services fee of around IDR 700,000 for foreigners and IDR 425,000 for domestic visitors, plus a separate regency visitor entry ticket of about IDR 1,000,000. So the realistic planning range is roughly IDR 700,000–1,700,000 per foreign visitor and IDR 425,000–1,000,000 per Indonesian visitor. Komodo Luxury confirms the current figure with the Raja Ampat tourism authority at the time of booking and states it on your invoice. Anyone publishing a single confident number without that caveat is quoting last season’s rules.
Separately, small community contributions are collected at some village jetties — Arborek, for instance — and at certain viewpoints. These are modest, in cash, and go directly to the villages.

Which airlines fly to Sorong?
Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air are the carriers charter itineraries most commonly use, routed through Jakarta, Makassar or Bali. There are no international flights into SOQ.
How long is the ferry from Sorong to Waisai?

Do I need a visa for Indonesia?
Requirements depend on your nationality and change periodically. Check the current rules with an Indonesian consulate or the official immigration portal before ticketing — we are a charter operator, not an immigration adviser, and we would rather say so than guess.
Is a separate permit needed for Raja Ampat beyond the park fee?
The marine park retribution is the main one, and it is checked at ranger posts, particularly in the north around Wayag. Your crew carries the documentation.
Can we store luggage during the cruise?
Yes — hard cases and anything you will not need are stowed aboard or held at the agent’s office in Sorong.
How early should we arrive at SOQ for the return flight?
Two hours for domestic departures, and build a buffer between disembarkation and check-in. Do not plan a same-day international connection out of Jakarta or Bali on the morning you disembark.
Is there an ATM or pharmacy in Sorong?
Yes, both, and Sorong is your last chance for either. Cash matters: village contributions, gratuities and small purchases in Raja Ampat are cash-only, and there are no machines once you sail.
What is the mobile coverage like?
Reasonable around Sorong and Waisai, patchy in the Dampier Strait, effectively absent north of the Fam Islands and around Misool. Satellite-equipped vessels are the exception.
Who buys the marine park permit — us or you?
We do, on your behalf, before boarding, and it appears as a line item on your invoice at the confirmed current rate.
Can you arrange hotels in Sorong?
Yes, pre- and post-charter nights, along with airport transfers on both legs. Ask when you book rather than after you arrive.
