Can you enjoy Raja Ampat without diving?
Genuinely, yes. This is the most biodiverse reef system on Earth — more than 550 hard coral species and over 1,300 reef fish species across roughly 1,500 islands, cays and shoals — and a great deal of it sits in the top ten metres. Jetty reefs at Arborek and Yenbuba are dense with fish in waist-to-chest depth. Manta Sandy’s cleaning station lies at 5–18 metres, shallow enough that surface swimmers watch the same animals the divers do.
What a private charter adds is timing and access. Day boats from Waisai arrive when everyone else arrives. A chartered vessel anchored overnight puts you on the reef at first light, when the water is glassy and the site is empty. At Manta Sandy the rules are the same for snorkellers as for divers: stay behind the markers, do not swim over the rays, do not touch. Guides brief it before anyone enters the water.
How does a mixed diver and snorkeller group work?
Badly, on a boat that treats snorkellers as an afterthought — and smoothly on one with two tenders and a guide who gets in the water. The pattern we use: divers drop at the deeper end of a site, snorkellers take the second tender to the shallow shoulder with a guide swimming alongside, and both groups surface within twenty minutes of each other. Nobody sits on deck waiting. On days when the divers head for a demanding current site like Blue Magic or Cape Kri, the snorkel group runs a completely separate programme — village visit, sandbar, jetty reef — rather than bobbing over a site not designed for them.

What gear and support do you get?
- Basic snorkel gear — mask, snorkel, fins, included as standard. Bring your own mask if you have a face that argues with rental sizes.
- Flotation — noodles, vests and rings for nervous swimmers; nobody should be talked into open water without one if they want it.
- Guide in the water — not on the tender. This is the difference between a good snorkel charter and a lift service.
- Drift protocol — where current runs, the tender follows the group downstream and picks you up; you never swim back against it.
- Sun protection — long-sleeve rash guards beat sunscreen, which also protects the reef.
What is there to do out of the water?
Enough to fill the days a charter is not on the reef. Piaynemo’s viewpoint is a wooden staircase of about 300 steps to a railed platform over the star lagoon. Kali Biru is a spring-fed, intensely blue freshwater river inland on Waigeo, reached by boat and a short guided jungle walk, with a cool pool to swim in. Batanta near Warmandi has a two-tier jungle waterfall a short forest hike from the shore. Sawinggrai village is the classic red bird-of-paradise viewing spot — a pre-dawn start, because they display at first light. Can you see manta rays while snorkelling in Raja Ampat?
Yes. Reef mantas are resident year-round at Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge, where the cleaning stations sit at 5–18 metres — well within sight from the surface in good visibility.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
For the jetty and sandbar sites, no: they are shallow, sheltered and enterable from a beach or ladder. For current sites, yes, or accept a flotation vest and a guide holding a tow line. Tell us honestly at booking and the crew plans around it.
Can children snorkel here?
Yes, at the shallow sites, with a vest and an adult or guide alongside. Yenbuba, Arborek and Sauwandarek are the classic family reefs.
Is snorkel gear included?
Basic mask, snorkel and fins are standard on charter vessels. Wetsuits or rash guards may be limited in size range, so bring your own if you are particular.
Which is better for snorkelling — the Dampier Strait or Misool?
The Dampier Strait, for shallow access and reliable manta cleaning stations close together. Misool is spectacular but more current-driven and better suited to divers; its lagoons, however, are the best kayaking in the region.
Can snorkellers join a dive liveaboard?
On a private charter, yes, and comfortably. On a shared per-cabin liveaboard the schedule revolves around dive times, and snorkellers often end up waiting. Exclusive use removes that problem.
When is the best time for calm water?
October to April, with December to March the most settled. Calm surface conditions matter more to snorkellers than to divers, so shoulder-season chop is worth avoiding.
What about jellyfish or dangerous marine life?
Standard tropical precautions: full-cover rash guard, no touching anything, listen to the briefing. Wobbegong sharks look alarming and are harmless if left alone; the walking sharks are small and nocturnal.
Are there non-water days?
Yes — viewpoints, waterfalls, villages and birdwatching. A good cruise director alternates so nobody is in salt water for eight hours a day.
How many guests suit a snorkel charter?
