Wayag needs seven nights on a cruising phinisi. It sits in the far north of the Raja Ampat marine protected area, roughly 2.5 hours from Waisai by fast speedboat and a full overnight leg under sail. A 7-night north expedition adds Kawe, Aljui Bay and the Fam Islands en route.
Why does Wayag take a week?
Because a phinisi is a comfortable ship, not a fast one. The northern archipelago is genuinely remote: getting there and back consumes two nights of cruising, the ranger posts and permit checks add time, and the sites worth seeing along the way — Piaynemo, Kawe, Aljui Bay — are strung out over more than a hundred nautical miles. Seven nights is what turns that string into a route instead of a sprint.
This is the flagship northern itinerary. Komodo Luxury, part of Juara Holding Group and operating Indonesian charters since 2015, runs it as a fully crewed, exclusive-use charter, usually from Sorong.

Sailing times move with sea state and with how much the captain wants to punch into a headwind. Treat the table as planning guidance, not a timetable.
What is the Wayag viewpoint climb like?
Nothing like Piaynemo. There is no staircase — you scramble up bare, sharp limestone using hands as much as feet. Closed shoes with grip are non-negotiable; reef sandals will shred and so will your palms. It is short, perhaps twenty to thirty minutes, but steep, and anyone with unreliable knees or a fear of exposure should be honest with the guide before starting. What you get at the top is the image most people mean when they say “Raja Ampat”: a labyrinth of green karst domes over water in five shades of blue.
Wayag sits inside the marine protected area and is patrolled by ranger posts that check park permits. Your crew handles the paperwork; you just need to be on board with the permit already arranged.
What else does the north offer besides the view?
- Aljui Bay — a deep, sheltered inlet with a working pearl farm. The muck and night diving here is exceptional and completely different in character from the Dampier Strait’s big-current sites: pygmy seahorses, frogfish, ghost pipefish, and blackwater diving on vessels equipped for it.
- Kawe — the equator crosses here; the reef walls and pinnacles see very few boats.
- The Fam group — Piaynemo’s ~300-step staircase, the star lagoon, and Melissa’s Garden (5–30 m, dense hard coral, intermediate).
- Kabui Bay and Batu Pensil — the karst channel between Waigeo and Gam, kayaked rather than dived.

Budget the whole trip, not just the boat. Add flights to Sorong, the marine park permit, dive packages at roughly USD 100–150 per diver per day where not bundled, nitrox at USD 10–20 per day, alcohol, port fees, gratuities and insurance. On very long routes — Wayag combined with Misool in one charter — a fuel surcharge can apply, and any operator who does not mention that up front is deferring an awkward conversation.
What is included on board?
Full crew (captain, engineer, deckhands, cruise director, chef, stewards, dive guides), three meals a day plus snacks, non-alcoholic drinks, tender use, basic snorkel gear and towels, island and village excursions, and fuel for the agreed itinerary. Excluded: the marine park permit, alcohol, scuba rental and dive packages on non-dive-dedicated boats, nitrox surcharge, port fees and local taxes, gratuities, insurance and domestic flights. Frequently asked questions
How far is Wayag from Waisai?
Roughly 2.5 hours each way by fast speedboat, and an overnight passage on a cruising phinisi. That distance is the single reason short charters cannot include it.
Can I do Wayag as a day trip?
Physically possible by speedboat from Waisai, and thoroughly unpleasant — five hours of open water for perhaps two hours ashore, weather permitting. A multi-day charter anchored overnight in the lagoon is a different experience entirely.
Do I need to be fit for the Wayag climb?
Reasonably. It is a steep scramble over sharp limestone rather than a staircase. Closed shoes with grip, and honesty about your knees.
Is there good diving in the north, or just scenery?
Both. Kawe’s walls and Aljui Bay’s muck and night diving are genuinely world-class and see a fraction of the traffic the Dampier Strait does. The north simply trades big-current fish action for critters and solitude.
What about permits at Wayag?
Ranger posts in the north check marine park permits. The permit is sold as an annual pass, bought in Sorong or Waisai, and your crew normally arranges it before boarding. Current fees are quoted at booking — published figures vary between operators, so we confirm rather than guess.
Which months suit the north best?
October to April, with December to March the settled peak. Northern passages are more exposed than the central strait, so sea state matters more here than on a Dampier-only trip.
Can we add Misool to a 7-night charter?

Is there phone signal or wifi?
Patchy to none north of the Fam Islands. Vessels with satellite connectivity keep a usable link; everyone else should tell the office they will be offline. Most guests decide this is the best part of the week.
How far ahead should we book?
Nine to twelve months for December to March on a good boat. Northern itineraries need longer lead times than central ones because fewer vessels run them.
How many guests suit this route?
Eight to fourteen is the sweet spot: enough to make the per-person maths work, few enough that tender logistics at Wayag stay simple.
