Raja Ampat and Komodo run on opposite seasons and different budgets. Komodo is cheaper to reach and to charter, sails from Labuan Bajo, and peaks roughly April to September. Raja Ampat requires flights to Sorong, commands higher rates for the same boat, and cruises October to April. Combining both in one charter is impractical.
How much more expensive is Raja Ampat than Komodo?
For an identical vessel, expect Raja Ampat to cost more — and the gap comes mostly from logistics rather than from the charter rate card. Fuel, provisioning and crew rotation are all more expensive in Papua than in Flores, and the boat has to be repositioned thousands of nautical miles to be there at all. Charter bands themselves overlap heavily:

The same boat will usually sit at the upper end of its band in Raja Ampat and the lower end in Komodo. Add the access difference — Labuan Bajo is a short hop from Bali, Sorong is a longer domestic flight via Jakarta, Makassar or Bali — and a Raja Ampat week lands meaningfully higher for the same standard of vessel. Why do the two destinations have opposite seasons?
Monsoon geometry. Raja Ampat’s comfortable cruising window runs October to April, with December to March the peak, and south-east winds make June to September the awkward months. Komodo’s calmest, driest window sits roughly April to September. That is not a marketing convenience — it is why a large part of the Indonesian charter fleet physically migrates between the two, spending the northern winter in Papua and the middle of the year in Flores.
The practical consequence for you: in December you are choosing Raja Ampat almost by default, and in July you are choosing Komodo almost by default. The months where both are genuinely on the table — late April, early October — are also the months when boats are in transit and availability is thin.

Can you combine Komodo and Raja Ampat in one charter?
Not sensibly. The two are separated by most of the Indonesian archipelago, and a delivery passage between them is measured in days of open-water cruising with nothing to dive along the way except a Banda Sea crossing that is itself a specialist expedition. Vessels do make the journey — that is the repositioning we described — but they do it as a delivery, not as a guest itinerary, and the few that sell the crossing sell it as a dedicated multi-week voyage.
The practical answer for travellers who want both: two separate trips, in two separate seasons, using flights to cover the distance. If you have three weeks and real determination, fly Bali–Labuan Bajo for a Komodo week, then Bali–Sorong for a Raja Ampat week, and accept that one of the two will be slightly out of its best season.
Which should a first-timer choose?
Choose Komodo if: your dates fall between April and September; your budget is the binding constraint; you have limited leave and want minimal travel days; you want dragons and dramatic dry landscapes; or you are testing whether liveaboard life suits you at all.
Choose Raja Ampat if: your dates fall between October and April; reef biodiversity is the point of the trip; you want manta cleaning stations you can snorkel over; you value emptiness over convenience; or you have already done Komodo and want the step up. Does the same boat feel different in each place?
Yes, in one specific way: distances. Komodo’s park is compact, so a phinisi spends short periods under way and long periods at anchor. Raja Ampat is spread across roughly 1,500 islands and cays, so northern and southern routes involve overnight repositioning legs — Sorong or Waisai to Misool is a ten to fourteen hour passage. Frequently asked questions
Is Raja Ampat worth the extra cost?
If reefs are your reason for travelling, most divers say yes without hesitation. If you are travelling primarily for scenery, sailing and a break from land, Komodo delivers a very similar holiday for less money and fewer travel days.
Which has better diving for beginners?
Raja Ampat, slightly — because its shallow, mild sites (Mioskon, Arborek, Manta Sandy) are genuinely world-class rather than filler. Komodo’s gentle sites are good; its famous ones are demanding. Certification thresholds for Raja Ampat are covered in our diver requirements guide.
Can I see Komodo dragons in Raja Ampat?
No. Dragons are endemic to the Komodo region. Raja Ampat’s terrestrial headline act is the red bird of paradise on Waigeo and Batanta.
Are manta encounters better in one or the other?
Both are excellent. Raja Ampat’s advantage is that reef mantas are resident year-round at shallow cleaning stations that snorkellers can watch — see our manta ray guide.
Which is better for a non-diving partner?
Raja Ampat, because the shallow reef, villages, viewpoints and birding give a non-diver a full day. Komodo’s land walks are excellent but shorter.
How far ahead should I book either?
