What exactly is the Raja Ampat marine park fee?
It is not a ticket to a place. It is a retribution — a conservation levy collected by the Raja Ampat regency and the marine protected area authority — and it buys you a tag, sometimes called a PIN card, that proves you have paid to be inside the protected area. Rangers at posts around Wayag and elsewhere do check it. The money is earmarked for patrol boats, ranger salaries, monitoring work and community programmes in the villages inside the MPA.
Unlike a national park entry ticket, it is annual. Pay once, and you are covered for twelve months from issue, whether you spend four nights or forty in the islands.
How much does it actually cost in 2027?
Here we have to be honest rather than tidy. Operator pages published across 2025 and 2026 do not agree with each other, and the fee structure has been revised more than once. Rather than print a single confident number that ages badly, this is the honest range:

Budget at the top of the range and treat anything less as a small refund. If a website quotes you a precise rupiah figure for a year that has not started yet, treat it as an estimate no matter how confidently it is written.
Who buys the permit — you or the boat?
On a fully crewed charter, the boat. Our office collects passport details in advance, an agent buys the tags in Sorong or Waisai before embarkation, and the physical tags are handed to you on board along with the receipts. You do not need to queue, and you do not need cash in the right denomination on arrival day.
Two practical consequences follow. First, we need your passport data early — late name changes mean a runner has to redo the paperwork. Second, the fee is almost always excluded from the charter rate and invoiced separately or collected on board, because the amount can change between booking and departure. Are there other fees on top?
Yes, and they are small but real. Villages inside the MPA collect a modest contribution at the jetty — Arborek is the best-known example, where the payment supports the community that maintains the reef you are swimming over. A handful of land sites (a spring-fed river, a viewpoint on private customary land, a jellyfish lake with local access rules) carry their own guide fee or community charge. None of these is large; together they are typically a rounding error against a charter rate, but they are cash-only and your cruise director will handle them from a float.

Do children pay?
Practice varies and the published rules are not consistent between sources — another reason we verify at booking rather than quoting. Historically, young children have been charged at a reduced rate or exempted, and Indonesian nationals pay materially less than foreign visitors. What does the money actually fund?
Patrols are the visible part. Raja Ampat’s protected area covers a vast, thinly populated seascape, and the ranger posts you pass near Wayag exist to check permits and to deter illegal fishing — including the shark and manta fishing that the regency banned outright. Beyond enforcement, the levy underwrites monitoring surveys and revenue-sharing with the communities who gave up fishing grounds to create no-take zones. That is the argument for paying it without complaint: the reef that holds more than 550 hard-coral species is not self-defending.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Raja Ampat permit valid for one trip or one year?
Twelve months from issue. If you return within the same calendar window — some divers do two trips a season — keep the tag and the receipt and you should not pay twice.
Can I buy it online in advance?
Online payment channels have appeared and disappeared over the years. For charter guests it is a non-issue: the operator buys it on your behalf. Independent travellers should expect to pay in person in Sorong or Waisai.
Do I need the physical tag with me while diving?
Keep it aboard, not in the water. Rangers check at the boat or at ranger posts on landing, not underwater. Your cruise director will normally hold the set for the group and present them together.
What happens if I lose it?
Tell the crew immediately. The receipt and the register entry are the real proof; replacing a lost tag mid-trip is possible but involves a run back to an office, which is why the boat usually keeps them.
Is the fee included in the charter price?
Almost never, on any operator. It is one of the standard exclusions alongside alcohol, dive equipment rental, nitrox surcharges, port fees, gratuities, insurance and flights to Sorong. Budget for it separately.
Does the fee cover the jellyfish lake and the viewpoints?

Why do different websites quote different amounts?
Because the structure genuinely changed — a separate environmental services fee and a regency visitor ticket were introduced alongside the older single retribution, and not every publisher updated. Anyone republishing an old figure looks authoritative and is simply out of date.
