Why does the Dampier Strait deserve a dedicated charter?
The strait between Waigeo and Batanta funnels nutrient-rich water past a chain of small islands — Kri, Mansuar, Arborek, Mioskon — and that current is what builds the biomass. Cape Kri holds one of the highest single-dive fish-species counts ever recorded: more than 350 species logged by Dr Gerald Allen. You can dive four different sites in a day here without repositioning more than twenty minutes. Nowhere else in Raja Ampat gives you that density.
Five days and four nights is the realistic minimum for a satisfying central route. Three nights forces you to skip either the manta cleaning stations or the current sites; four nights lets you dive both, and gives the tides room to cooperate. Manta Sandy runs on strict etiquette: guests kneel behind the marker stones and let the animals come to the cleaning station. No touching, no chasing, no swimming over the top. Rangers and guides enforce it, and rightly so.

Three dives on a full day, occasionally four with a night dive, is the normal rhythm. The last day is deliberately quiet: no deep profile within 24 hours of flying, no exceptions. Tasselled wobbegongs rest under ledges around Kri, Mansuar and Arborek year-round; epaulette “walking” sharks are a night-dive speciality on the shallow, sheltered reefs nearby.
What do divers need to bring or prove?
- Certification card — Open Water minimum for the gentle sites, Advanced strongly recommended for Cape Kri and Blue Magic.
- Logged dives — most vessels want to see recent experience before putting you into a swirling seamount current; if your last dive was years ago, book a refresher.
- Drift skills — reef hooks, negative entries and comfort in current are the difference between enjoying the Dampier Strait and enduring it.
- Dive insurance — required, not suggested. The nearest hyperbaric facilities are a long way from the strait.

How do non-divers fit into a dive charter?
Comfortably, if the crew plans it. While divers are down, snorkellers run a parallel programme from the tender: Manta Sandy is shallow enough that surface swimmers see the same rays, Arborek Jetty and Yenbuba are fish-dense in three metres of water, and the villages, Kabui karst and kayaking fill the surface intervals. Mixed groups work best on boats with two tenders. If nobody in your party dives at all, the snorkelling charter for non-divers is cheaper and better designed for you.

How many dives per day on a Raja Ampat liveaboard?
Three on a full cruising day is standard, with an optional night dive. Some boats offer four when the itinerary allows; the last day before flying is limited or skipped entirely.
Do I need Advanced Open Water for the Dampier Strait?
Not for Manta Sandy, Mioskon or Arborek Jetty. Yes, effectively, for Cape Kri and Blue Magic — both routinely run strong current at depth, and Blue Magic often requires a negative entry.
Is nitrox available?
On most dive-capable charter vessels, yes, usually at USD 10–20 per diver per day or USD 70–150 per week. A few top-tier boats include it. Confirm the compressor and fill capacity when you book — it varies by vessel.
When are mantas around?
Reef mantas are resident and can be seen year-round at Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge, with oceanic mantas at Blue Magic. Encounter probability is highest during the main October–April cruising season rather than confined to a narrow window.
Is dive insurance compulsory?
Yes. Every reputable Raja Ampat operator, ourselves included, requires proof of dive-inclusive travel insurance before the first entry.
What about currents — is it dangerous?
The strait is demanding, not reckless. Dives are planned around slack windows, guides brief entry and exit points precisely, and the tender follows the group’s bubbles. Divers who cannot hold a safety stop in moving water are steered to the gentler sites.
Can we combine Dampier Strait with Misool?

Can I rent full dive gear on board?
Yes on dive-equipped vessels: BCD, regulator, wetsuit and computer are rented per item. Bring your own mask and computer if you can — fit and familiarity matter more than you think on a drift dive.
What is the best month for diving here?
October through April, with December to March offering the most settled sea state. Visibility fluctuates with plankton, which is also what brings the mantas in.
How far ahead should we book a dive charter?
Six to nine months for peak season on a well-equipped dive boat. Nitrox-capable vessels with a proper dive deck are the first to go.
