Do Raja Ampat charter boats have Wi-Fi?
Some do, properly; some offer a cellular hotspot that works in a handful of anchorages; some offer nothing at all. The honest answer is that connectivity is a per-vessel specification, not a regional given, and it belongs on your checklist alongside cabin count and dive deck.
What has changed in recent years is the availability of low-earth-orbit satellite internet, which works far from cell towers and has made genuine broadband possible on vessels that previously had none. Where a boat carries it and the sky is clear, video calls from a Misool anchorage are realistic. Where it does not, you are relying on a cellular signal that thins out rapidly once you leave Waisai.
Two practical warnings. Satellite service is bandwidth-shared across everyone aboard, so a dozen guests streaming simultaneously will degrade it for all of them; most boats manage this with fair-use rules. And any satellite system needs open sky — a vessel tucked tight against a limestone wall in a narrow Misool lagoon can lose the link entirely.

Can you actually work from a charter?
Yes, with discipline and the right boat. What works in practice:
- Book a vessel with a confirmed satellite system and get it in writing in the charter confirmation, not as a verbal assurance.
- Cluster your work into fixed blocks — an hour after breakfast, an hour before dinner — rather than trying to be reachable all day. Everyone else is diving anyway.
- Warn your counterparts before departure that responses may be delayed by hours, not minutes.
- Download everything you need before you sail. Documents, charts, reading, offline maps.
- Schedule calls against the itinerary, not the clock — a call during a Misool crossing is a bad idea for reasons beyond bandwidth.
- Mind the time zone. Raja Ampat runs on Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT, UTC+9), two hours ahead of Jakarta.
Corporate groups and incentive trips do this routinely — one connected morning block, then the boat goes back to being a boat. What about power for cameras and laptops?
Cabins and saloons on charter phinisi carry 220 V sockets, typically European two-pin. Power comes from generators and an inverter bank, which has two consequences worth planning for:
- Heavy loads are best run while the generator is on — usually during the day and evening rather than deep at night. Charge camera batteries and laptops then.
- Multi-battery chargers and dive-light banks draw more than most guests realise. If you are travelling with underwater strobes and several bodies, bring a power strip and share the socket schedule with the crew.
- Bring spares. The nearest replacement battery is a flight away. Two or three per body, and a portable power bank for phones.
Salt and humidity are harder on gear than the electrical supply is. Rinse everything, keep camera bodies out of the air-conditioned cabin overnight to avoid condensation, and keep silica gel in the housing case.
Is being disconnected actually a problem?
For most guests it turns out to be the point. Raja Ampat is one of the few places left where being unreachable is the default rather than a choice you have to defend. The practical steps that make it comfortable rather than stressful are simple: set an out-of-office before you fly, give a family member the operator’s office number as an emergency channel, and tell them that no news means the boat is where it should be.
