Raja Ampat Honeymoon & Couples Private Charter

For two people, a small three- to five-cabin phinisi on exclusive use beats a large vessel in every way that matters — cost, intimacy and how quickly the crew learns your rhythm. Expect roughly USD 1,900–4,500 per night for a value phinisi and USD 8,000–14,000 for a luxury one, whole boat.

Is a private charter sensible for just two people?

More often than couples expect. A private charter is priced by the boat, not the head, so the question is not “can two people justify a whole vessel” but “which vessel size makes the number reasonable”. On a four-cabin value phinisi, two guests pay the same as eight would — which sounds absurd until you compare it with two luxury resort villas plus daily private boat hire for a week. The gap narrows fast, and what you get is a boat that moves while you sleep.

Komodo Luxury, part of Juara Holding Group and running Indonesian charters since 2015, arranges exclusive-use honeymoon charters throughout the October–April season. The crew stays the same size whether you are two or twelve, which is precisely why couples find the service startling.

What does it cost for two?

Vessel Cabins Per night (USD) 4 nights 5 nights 7 nights
Small value phinisi (25–32 m) 3–5 1,900–4,500 7,600–18,000 9,500–22,500 13,300–31,500
Mid-range phinisi (30–40 m) 5–7 4,500–9,000 18,000–36,000 22,500–45,000 31,500–63,000
Luxury phinisi (40–51 m) 5–9 8,000–14,000 32,000–56,000 40,000–70,000 56,000–98,000

Those are whole-boat figures for two guests in exclusive use. Some owners apply a reduced two-guest rate on larger vessels in shoulder season; it is always worth asking, and we always ask on your behalf. For comparison with shared-cabin liveaboards — typically USD 400–900 per person per night on standard boats, USD 700–1,500 on luxury ones — see our charter cost page.

Which cabin should a couple take?

A typical Raja Ampat phinisi runs one master suite plus deluxe and twin cabins, mostly ensuite, air-conditioned, across five to seven cabins on a 30–45 metre hull. The master is usually on the main deck: larger windows, more light, closest to the saloon. Lower-deck deluxe cabins are darker but noticeably steadier in a swell, which matters on repositioning nights. Our honest advice for a honeymoon: take the master for the view, and ask the crew to plan the long crossings for after dinner so you sleep through the motion either way.

What romantic set-pieces are actually deliverable?

  • Private sandbar dinner — a table set on a tidal sandbar with lanterns, tender standing by. Entirely tide-dependent, so the crew picks the night, not you.
  • Piaynemo at sunrise, alone — anchoring overnight nearby and climbing the roughly 300 steps at first light usually means the platform to yourselves before the day boats arrive from Waisai.
  • Bioluminescence swim — on dark, moonless nights in sheltered bays the water lights up when you move through it. Conditions-dependent, never guaranteed.
  • Deck massage — available on vessels carrying a therapist; otherwise arranged as a pre-charter add-on.
  • Karst lagoon kayaking — Kabui Bay, Batu Pensil, and in Misool the Balbulol and Yapap lagoons, best in the two hours after sunrise.

We list these with their conditions attached because the alternative — promising bioluminescence and delivering an ordinary dark bay — is how honeymoons get spoiled.

Proposals, anniversaries and how to plan them

Tell us in advance and tell only us. Cakes, flowers, decorations and a photographer are all arranged from Sorong before departure, and the crew is briefed to keep the secret. The reliable proposal moments are the sandbar dinner, the Piaynemo platform at sunrise and the foredeck at last light on a still evening. Ring security is worth a thought: hand it to the cruise director for the safe rather than carrying it in a dive bag.

Which months are best — and what about rain?

The cruising season runs October to April, with December to March the peak for calm water and visibility. That window is also the wetter half of the year in West Papua: expect short, heavy tropical showers rather than all-day drizzle, usually clearing within the hour. Between June and September many vessels reposition to Komodo when the south-east winds are strongest, so options thin out. Couples who want the calmest sea and the emptiest sites usually land on late October, November or April. Peak festive dates carry their own dynamics — see the Christmas and New Year charter page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best boat for honeymooners in Raja Ampat?

A small phinisi of three to five cabins with a proper main-deck master. Big vessels feel cavernous with two guests aboard, and the crew-to-guest ratio on a smaller boat is already extraordinary.

How many nights should a honeymoon charter be?

Five is the sweet spot: enough for the Dampier Strait plus Piaynemo without a punishing schedule. Four works if flights are tight; seven lets you add the northern islands.

Do we have to dive?

Not at all. The shallow reef at Arborek, Yenbuba and Manta Sandy is world-class for snorkelling — see the non-divers charter. Mixed couples where one dives and one does not are handled easily on a private boat.

Is there privacy with a crew of ten aboard?

Yes, and it is the thing guests comment on most. Good crews are close to invisible: they read when to be present and when to vanish. Say the word and dinner arrives on the foredeck rather than in the saloon.

Can we celebrate an anniversary or birthday on board?

Yes. Give us two weeks’ notice for cakes, decorations and any special provisioning, since everything is loaded in Sorong.

What about seasickness?

Inside the Dampier Strait it is rarely an issue. On repositioning legs, take medication before departure, sleep in a lower-deck cabin and ask the captain to time the crossing overnight.

Is wifi available?

Some vessels carry satellite connectivity; many do not, and coverage disappears north of the Fam Islands. Assume you will be offline and treat any signal as a bonus.

How far ahead should we book?

Six to nine months for December to March. Small boats with a good master cabin are the first to go, and honeymoon dates rarely flex.
