Which Raja Ampat dive sites should you prioritise?
There are hundreds of named sites across roughly 1,500 islands, cays and shoals. The fifteen below are the ones a private charter is genuinely built around — the sites your cruise director will fight the tide table to give you at the right hour. Read the table as a planning tool: the current column tells you how much drift experience you need, and the zone column tells you how many nights the site costs you.

What makes the Dampier Strait cluster so productive?
The Dampier Strait is a funnel. Water squeezes between Waigeo and Batanta, accelerates over shallow ridges and delivers nutrients to reefs that sit right in the flow. That is why Cape Kri holds one of the highest single-dive fish counts ever recorded — over 350 species logged in one immersion by Dr Gerald Allen. It is also why the strait rewards timing over ambition: the same site that is a gentle 25-minute glide at slack water becomes an unmanageable washing machine two hours later.
On a private charter this matters more than the site list. When the whole boat belongs to one group, the cruise director can plan dives around tide, not around a fixed schedule shared with strangers. Blue Magic at the wrong hour is a negative-entry scramble; at the right hour it is a hover over a seamount while oceanic mantas circle. That single scheduling freedom is the strongest practical argument for the 5-day/4-night Dampier Strait charter over a fixed-departure cabin booking.
Are the Fam Islands worth a separate leg?
Yes, but for a different reason. Fam is where the diving turns from adrenaline to architecture. Melissa’s Garden is a shallow hard-coral plateau at 5–30 m with mild to moderate current — technically undemanding, visually overwhelming. Fam also sits within easy reach of the Piaynemo viewpoint, so a single anchorage buys you a dawn dive and a mid-morning karst panorama. Northern Wayag adds the ranger posts, the karst scramble and the baby-shark shallows, but it is far enough north to require a dedicated overnight leg.
Why does Misool feel like a different country?
Because it is roughly ten to fourteen hours of overnight cruising from Sorong or Waisai, and the reef structure changes with the geology. Misool’s limestone karst continues underwater as walls, pinnacles and swim-throughs draped in soft coral. Magic Mountain (Karang Bayangan) is the headline: a ridge with a plateau at 5–15 m dropping past 30–40 m, hosting both reef and oceanic manta cleaning stations. Four Kings and Boo Windows sit nearby. Nothing in Misool is a day trip from the north — plan the nights, or skip it honestly.

The arithmetic is unforgiving and worth stating plainly: you cannot buy more sites by cruising faster, because the boat is slow by design and the good hours are tide-bound. You buy sites with nights. Groups who want the complete picture take the 10-night grand tour charter; everyone else chooses a zone and does it properly.
What will you see that is not a dive site?
Tasselled wobbegong sharks rest under ledges around Kri, Mansuar, Arborek and Misool all year — flat, carpet-patterned and completely unbothered by divers. Epaulette “walking” sharks come out on shallow sheltered reefs after dark, using their pectoral fins to crawl across sand. Neither requires luck so much as a guide who knows the specific bommie. Both are reasons to keep one night dive on the plan.

By recorded fish diversity, Cape Kri. By sheer reliability of a big-animal encounter, Magic Mountain in Misool. By accessibility for mixed-ability groups, Manta Sandy. There is no consensus answer, and any operator who gives you one without asking about your certification is guessing.
Can Open Water divers handle Raja Ampat?
Yes, with site selection. Mioskon, Arborek Jetty, Manta Sandy and the Kri house reefs are all comfortable at Open Water level in mild current. How many dives per day on a charter?
Three day dives plus an optional night dive is the standard rhythm. On a private charter you can drop to two if the group prefers long surface intervals, village visits or birding — the schedule is yours, not the boat’s.
Do I need a reef hook?
For the strong-current sites, yes. Use it on bare rock or dead substrate only, never on living coral. Most well-run boats carry spares, but bring your own if you have one you trust.
Is visibility consistent across the sites?
It varies with tide and plankton load rather than with season alone. Nutrient-rich water is exactly what draws the mantas and the fish schools, so the days with the most life are sometimes the days with the least visibility. That trade-off is the whole bargain of the Coral Triangle.
Which sites work for snorkellers?

Do the marine park fees cover dive sites?
